The East Ramapo Central School District is the only one in the Mid-Hudson classified by the state comptroller’s office as being in “significant fiscal stress” and the state senator representing the area said something must be done about it.

New York State Senator David Carlucci said the problem should be addressed on the state level.

“We have to make sure that we change the laws, bring East Ramapo into the 21st century, make sure they have the proper oversight and guidance, to make sure they can turn things around,” said Carlucci.

The New City Democrat called East Ramapo “an unprecedented district. There is no district like it and we can do report after report and they will all say the same thing, that East Ramapo is in trouble and needs drastic changes to turn things around.”

The district has been plagued in recent years with controversy over the makeup of the school board and many of its actions. Over time, many of its members have been elected from the orthodox Jewish community, whose children attend private religious schools.
