Teachout Announces Bid For NY-19th

Zephyr Teachout

Democrat Zephyr Teachout today announced she is running for the New York Congressional seat currently held by Republican Chris Gibson, who is not seeking a fourth term. WAMC’s Allison Dunne has more.

Teachout, a Fordham Law School professor who ran against Governor Andrew Cuomo in the 2014 Democratic primary, calls herself a reformer focused on a broken political system. In that primary, Teachout performed well in the counties that are part of the sprawling 19th congressional district, a district she says calls for a non-partisan approach.

:11  “And I think 80 percent of the job is not partisan. It’s really serving the very particular needs, and they’re very different, throughout the district.”

On the Republican side, contenders include former assemblyman John Faso and Dutchess County businessman Andrew Heaney.
