Hunger Action Network Repeats Request For Funds From New York State

Susan Zimet

An organization working to fight hunger in New York is repeating a request to Gov. Andrew Cuomo for $16.5 million to fight what it says is a growing crisis in the state.

Susan Zimet, director of the Hunger Action Network said Thursday that state leaders work quickly to give millions to corporations who threaten to leave New York, but are slow to respond to a growing demand for food at food pantries around the state.

More than 30 lawmakers wrote to Cuomo six months ago seeking the funds, which would be on top of $34.5 million already earmarked for anti-hunger initiatives.

Cuomo's office took no action on the request.

A spokesman says a task force is studying the hunger problem and will soon submit a report.
