Regents Chancellor Tisch Won't Seek Another Term

One of New York state's top education leaders, Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch, says she won't seek another term.

Tisch made the announcement Monday at the start of the policy-making board's monthly meeting in Albany.

Tisch, who has been chancellor since 2009, was first appointed to the board in 1996. The former first-grade teacher was re-elected to five-year terms in 2001, 2006 and 2011. Her current term ends in March.

She's been at the helm through a series of sometimes rocky reforms, including the state's shift to the Common Core learning standards adopted with the goal of better preparing students for college.

While announcing her decision not to seek another term, Tisch urged fellow board members to continue to pursue higher standards.
