NY Regents Recommend School Aid Increase

A Board of Regents subcommittee has voted to recommend a $1.3 billion dollar increase in state aid for New York schools next year, along with fairer funding for high-needs districts and bigger investments in universal pre-kindergarten programs and teacher training.

The recommendations announced Monday are expected to be approved by the full board and sent to the state Legislature.

Also Monday, Education Commissioner John King Jr. and Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch said they are moving forward on recommendations to improve implementation of the new Common Core learning standards statewide.

The recommendations were made by the Educational Conference Board, a panel made up of parents, school board members, teachers and others. The recommendations include increasing understanding of the Common Core, ensuring adequate funding, and reducing testing time.
