Police Seek Owner Of Backpack Carried By Escapee

New York State Police are seeking the public's help in locating the owner of a backpack an escaped murderer was carrying when he was shot and wounded by a trooper near the Canadian border.

Police on Friday say 35-year-old David Sweat had a red and black TYR brand backpack. Officials have said Sweat was carrying maps, tools, Pop Tarts and other items in the backpack when he was caught June 28.

Troopers say the backpack is believed to have been stolen from a camp in neighboring Franklin or Clinton County.

Sweat and Richard Matt escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora on June 6.

Matt was fatally shot by a border patrol agent June 26. Sweat is in fair condition Friday at an Albany hospital.
