Friday evening New York State Police Troop B Commander Charles Guess announced that 51 year old Joyce Mitchell had been arrested for her role in supporting Richard Matt and David Sweat’s escape from the Clinton Correctional facility in Dannemora.
Major Guess, the commander of the regional state police barracks, said Mitchell is being charged with promoting prison contraband, a felony, and criminal facilitation 4th degree, a misdemeanor.

“This is one large piece of the puzzle in our quest to find these two escaped murderers," said Guess.

Mitchell was arraigned in the Plattsburgh City court Friday night and remanded to the Clinton County jail.

Mitchell's family has said she would not have helped the convicts break out.

Mitchell has another court appearance scheduled for Monday.
