New York state has bought a more than 1,400-acre nature preserve to protect water quality in Lake George and a major tributary.

The Berry Pond Preserve lies within the Warren County towns of Lake George, Lake Luzerne and Warrensburg. It includes the headwaters of West Brook, a major tributary to the southern basin of Lake George.

The state bought the property for $1.7 million from the Lake George Land Conservancy. The conservancy had purchased the preserve in January 2008 amid an effort to make a dramatic reduction in sediments and pollutants running into West Brook and into Lake George near the Million Dollar Beach.

The property will be added to the State Forest Preserve. The state will pay full local property and school taxes on it.
