Construction Begins On Six-Story Lake George Hotel

Ground has been broken for a new hotel in a popular summertime Adirondack tourist town that's hoping to become a year-round destination.

The Post-Star of Glens Falls reports that local officials gathered Thursday on the village of Lake George's main drag for a groundbreaking ceremony for a Courtyard Marriott.

The 119-room, six-story hotel is expected to open in time for the 2016 summer tourist season.

In July 2013, the village board approved a local zoning law change that allows the construction of six-story buildings in certain areas. Some groups had opposed the project, saying the taller structure would be out of character with the rest of the village.

Officials say the new hotel's meeting and convention space that will enable local tourism offices to market Lake George as a year-round destination.
