Thousands are speaking out against a proposed 124-mile natural gas pipeline in New York.

The Albany Times Union reports more than 5,000 individual comments against the Constitution Pipeline were filed with the state Department of Environmental Conservation Friday.

The $750 million project would carry hydrofracked natural gas from northern Pennsylvania’s Marcellus Shale region through New York before it could travel through New England and Canada.

Anne Marie Garti, a founding member of group Stop the Pipeline said, "The pipeline simply cannot be done without violating laws that are meant to protect us.”

Supporters have said the pipeline would generate money for property tax relief and schools.

The project was approved by federal regulators in December.
