Political Powerhouse David Garth Dies In New York

A powerful political adviser who was influential in the elections of several New York City mayors has died. David Garth was 84.

Friends say Garth died Monday at his Manhattan home after a long illness. He worked for Democrats and moderate Republicans throughout his career, instrumental in the elections of mayors John Lindsay, Ed Koch, Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg.   

Garth also worked on behalf of governors Hugh Carey in New York, Brendan Byrne in New Jersey and Ella Grasso in Connecticut.

His funeral will be private.  More...

Dave Lucas is WAMC’s Capital Region Bureau Chief. Born and raised in Albany, he’s been involved in nearly every aspect of local radio since 1981. Before joining WAMC, Dave was a reporter and anchor at WGY in Schenectady. In 2012, Dave received a Communicator Award of Distinction for his WAMC news story "Fail: The NYS Flood Panel," which explores whether the damage from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee could have been prevented or at least curbed. Dave began his radio career as a “morning personality” at WABY in Albany.
