Police nab alleged Plaza stabber

New York State Police

New York State Police say they have apprehended the man they believe stabbed a state trooper in the neck with a steak knife at Albany’s Empire State Plaza on Sunday.

At a press conference this afternoon, a police spokesman said 18-year-old Eric L. Green was located by state police at the corner of Western and Washington Avenues in Albany shortly before 12:30 p.m. this afternoon. They say Green initially identified himself under another name before being taken into custody without incident.

Police say he will be arraigned this evening on charges of aggravated assault of a police officer and robbery, both felonies, and criminal possession of a weapon.

Green allegedly attacked Trooper Rodney Smith and took his police radio in the concourse of the Empire State Plaza Sunday afternoon after telling him he was new in town and needed help. As Smith was checking his identity, officials say Green stabbed the trooper in the neck.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
