NY AG: Charities raise $400m for Sandy relief

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman

Eric Schneiderman's office surveyed 88 nonprofit groups that have been soliciting donations for storm relief. As of mid-December, the fundraising had been dominated by five charities.

They include the American Red Cross, the Robin Hood Foundation, The Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City, the Empire State Relief Fund and The Salvation Army.

Donors will soon be able to log on to the attorney general's website to see how those groups and 83 others say they intend to spend that money.

The attorney general says state regulators will be following up with the groups to get more information about the services they have provided.
