Albany, NY – Well a southwestern Pennsylvania race track and casino is putting its relationship with Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris on hiatus for comments he made in support of ousted Penn State coach Joe Paterno.
The Meadows Racetrack and Casino issued a statement yesterday, saying Harris and the track have "mutually decided to put their business relationship on hold."
In other developments at State College, Penn State has named Dr. David Joyner its acting athletic director in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal. Joyner takes over immediately, replacing Tim Curley, who stepped aside after being charged with perjury and failing to report a 2002 child rape accusation against Sandusky to police.
And a new judge has been assigned to handle the child sex abuse charges against former Penn State football assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. The change removed a judge with ties to The Second Mile, a charity founded by Sandusky for at-risk children. Sandusky is due in court on December 7.
To Top 25 college basketball Casper Ware scored a career-high 28 points, as Long Beach State ran away from ninth-ranked Pittsburgh 86-76.
Ben Brust poured in a barrage of first half threes, finishing with a career-high 17, leading 14th-ranked Wisconsin to a 68-41 win over Colgate.
To the NHL... Ilya Kovalchuk scored in his return from a groin injury, helping the Devils skate past the Sabres 5-3.
Elsewhere, Montreal blanked Carolina 4-0, Los Angeles edged Anaheim 2-1, and Chicago routed Vancouver 5-1.
In NFL news... Bills wideout Stevie Johnson and Eagles quarterback Michael Vick both missed practice yesterday, and their status for this weekend remains uncertain. Meanwhile, Jets tailback LaDainian Tomlinson has been ruled out of tonight's game at Denver with a sprained MCL.
In baseball news Arizona's Kirk Gibson and Tampa Bay's Joe Maddon have been voted Managers of the Year. Gibson guided the Diamondbacks to a worst-to-first finish in his first full season as a big league manager, while Maddon's Rays overcame a nine-game deficit in September to beat Boston for the AL wild card.
