Albany, NY – Well in the men's college basketball coaching galaxy, it's now Coach K and then everybody else...
Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski became Division I's all-time winningest men's coach, when Number 6 Duke beat Michigan State 74-69 last night at Madison Square Garden. For Krzyzewski, it's his 903rd win, breaking the tie with Bob Knight, his college coach at Army and his mentor throughout his professional career.
In other Top 25 action, 2nd-ranked Kentucky dumped 12th-ranked Kansas 75-65, 3rd-ranked Ohio State held off 7th-ranked Florida 81-74, and 5th-ranked Syracuse cruised past Albany 98-74.
In NBA news, locked-out players, including Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant, have filed class-action antitrust lawsuits against the league in at least two states, moving pro basketball's labor dispute from the negotiating table to federal court. Today is day 139 of the NBA lockout, and there is no end in sight. Games through December 15th have already been canceled.
To the ice, last night in New York, Brad Richards' go-ahead goal with 4:55 remaining snapped a 2-2 tie and sent the Rangers to their seventh straight victory, 4-2 over the Islanders.
In Boston, Benoit Pouliot scored the tiebreaking goal with three minutes left in the third, to give the Bruins a 4-3 win over the Devils. Boston's won six straight.
Elsewhere, Minnesota rallied to beat Columbus 4-2, St. Louis skated past Detroit 2-1, Ottawa downed Calgary 3-1, Pittsburgh doubled up Colorado 6-3, Nashville got by Washington 3-1, Florida crushed Dallas 6-0, and Phoenix edged Toronto 3-2 in a shootout.
In NFL news, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is nursing a fractured right thumb entering the team's bye-week, and Jets running back LaDainian Tomlinson has a sprained MCL in his left knee - his status for Thursday's game is uncertain.
And in baseball news, Tigers ace Justin Verlander picked up the AL Cy Young Award.
