Albany, NY – Well explosive allegations leave a legendary coach fighting for his job...
Penn State's board of trustees will appoint a special committee to examine the "circumstances" that led to a child sex-abuse scandal and possible cover-up involving a former assistant to Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno.
The furor over the indictments of former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky and two university officials is eroding support among board members for Paterno, college football's winningest coach, to stay in his job.
Sandusky is alleged to have molested eight young boys between 1994 and 2009. Two Penn State administrators have since resigned after failing to notify authorities of a 2002 incident reported by an eyewitness.
Meanwhile, The Patriot-News of Harrisburg reports that another potential victim has come forward, contacting authorities about his encounters with Sandusky about a decade ago.
To the ice, Dallas dumped Washington 5-2, St. Louis shutout Chicago 3-0, Florida routed Toronto 5-1, Detroit downed Colorado 5-2, Buffalo outlasted Winnipeg 6-5 in OT, Edmonton got by Montreal 3-1, New Jersey edged Carolina 3-2, Minnesota blanked Calgary 3-0, and Los Angeles held off Nashville 4-3.
In baseball news, sources say former Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona has interviewed for the St. Louis Cardinals' managerial vacancy. St. Louis is seeking a replacement for Tony La Russa, who retired two days after winning the World Series.
In NBA news, doing its best Howie Mendel impression, the league has said: Deal, or no deal? NBA players made it clear yesterday: No deal. Players Association President Derek Fisher says the current offer on the table is "one that we cannot accept." The deal expires this afternoon. Commissioner David Stern says the next offer is expected to call for rolling back players' salaries, a 53-47 revenue split in the owners' favor, and essentially a hard salary cap.
And in NFL news, the Albert Haynsworth experiment is over in New England. The Patriots have released the defensive tackle, who recorded just three tackles and no sacks through six games.
