Albany, NY – Public school districts in New York state are now able to apply for grants based on improving student performance. WAMC's Tristan O'Neill reports...
The grants will total $75 million over the next three years.
The state's 700 school districts have until January 17 to apply and make a case that their innovation is worthy of a grant and can be replicated in schools statewide.
The competitive grants were part of Governor Andrew Cuomo's budget proposal last January. They were approved by the Legislature in the budget adopted in April.
It's a departure from traditional school aid which is based on the number of pupils in a district, economic and other factors not related to student performance.
