Albany, NY – Well the Yankees have clinched the American League East...

Yesterday in the Bronx, New York locked up its 16th postseason trip in 17 seasons, sweeping a doubleheader from Tampa Bay by identical 4-2 scores.

In Boston, Vladimir Guerrero's tie-breaking, two-run single in the eighth, gave Baltimore a 6-4 win over sputtering Boston. The Red Sox cling to a 2 1/2 game lead in the wild card race over both the Rays and now the Angels, who've moved back into the playoff hunt following their 7-2 win over Toronto.

Elsewhere in the AL, Detroit doubled up Kansas City 6-3, the White Sox topped Cleveland 8-4, Seattle got by Minnesota 5-4, and Texas edged Oakland 3-2 - the Rangers magic number to clinch the AL West is three.

Over to the NL, in St. Louis, David Freese homered and knocked in five, as the Cardinals held off the Mets 6-5. St. Louis has pulled within 1 1/2 games of Atlanta in the wild card race, following the Braves 4-0 loss to Florida.

Elsewhere, the Cubs routed Milwaukee 7-1, San Francisco beat the Dodgers 8-5, Washington downed Philadelphia 7-5, Cincinnati blanked Houston 2-0, San Diego dropped Colorado 4-0, and Arizona topped Pittsburgh 8-5 - the Diamondbacks magic number in the NL West is two.

In NFL news, following the Giants-Rams contest, the league has sent a memo to all 32 teams, warning of fines, suspensions and loss of draft picks if it determines players faked injuries during a game. While some injuries may have been faked, this one wasn't. Giants wide-out Domenik Hixon will miss the rest of the season after tearing his ACL for the second straight year.

In college football news, sources say Navy and Air Force are the top choices for Big East expansion, but as football-only members. The Big East is trying to regroup after Syracuse and Pittsburgh decided to join the ACC, and U-Conn remains uncommitted to the conference.

And in NHL news, Patrik Elias scored 45 seconds into overtime, lifting the Devils to a 2-1 win over the Rangers in the preseason opener for both teams last night at the Times-Union Center.

And Mike Modano, the top scoring U.S.-born player in league history, is retiring after 21 seasons.
