Taking the field last night in front of the 698th straight sellout at Fenway, Jacoby Ellsbury lifted a tie-breaking, two-run homer in the sixth, as Boston beat New York 9-5. The Red Sox have won 11 of 14 against the Yankees this year.
Elsewhere in the AL, Cleveland edged Oakland 4-3 in 16, Seattle rallied past the Angels 2-1, Tampa Bay topped Texas 4-1, Toronto blew out Baltimore 13-0, Detroit dumped Kansas City 5-4, and Minnesota downed the White Sox 7-6.
Over to the NL, in Queens, Lucas Duda hit a tie-breaking single in the seventh, as the Mets rallied to beat the Marlins 3-2.
Elsewhere, San Francisco blanked the Cubs 4-0, Arizona doubled up Colorado 4-2, Atlanta nipped Washington 3-1, Philadelphia shutout Cincinnati 3-0, St. Louis dropped Milwaukee 8-3, Houston held off Pittsburgh 2-0, and the Dodgers beat San Diego 4-2.
In other baseball news, federal prosecutors have dropped all the remaining charges against Barry Bonds. This comes days after a judge upheld the slugger's conviction on an obstruction of justice count.
In tennis, results from Day 3 of the U.S. Open...
On the Men's side, Andy Roddick and Andy Murray have advanced to Round 3, while Robin Soderling has withdrawn from the tournament, citing an undisclosed illness.
On the Women's side, Vera Zvonareva and Maria Sharapova advanced to the third round, as did American teenager Christina McHale, who upset eighth seed Marion Bartoli. And two-time U.S. Open champ Venus Williams has withdrawn from the tournament, after being diagnosed with Sjogren's syndrome, an autoimmune disease that causes fatigue and joint pain.
And in NHL news, former Predator Wade Belak, an enforcer who had played with five teams before retiring in March, has been found dead in Toronto. He's the third NHL enforcer found dead in the last four months. Winnipeg's Rick Rypien was found dead earlier this month, and former Rangers enforcer Derek Boogaard died in May.
