Albany, NY – A short expressway used each weekday by thousands of state workers heading to jobs in downtown Albany has now reopened after being shut down the past two weeks for emergency
repairs. WAMC's Ian Pickus has more...
The state Department of Transportation opened the South Mall Expressway at 6 a.m. Friday.
The expressway carries Routes 9 and 20 and connects the Empire State Plaza to the Dunn Memorial Bridge, which spans the Hudson River and links Albany with the city of Rensselaer. DOT officials say all highway ramps and local streets near the bridge and a state-owned parking lot beneath the span also will be reopened.
DOT shut down the elevated highway after an inspection on July 13 revealed a 10-foot-long crack in the concrete pier cap beam of two piers carrying the bridge over a heavily traveled city street.
