Albany, NY – Well it was another inconclusive day in trying to end the four-month-old NFL lockout...
NFL players didn't vote on a full proposal to settle the league's labor dispute, citing several outstanding issues. The group's executive committee and team reps met for ten hours yesterday. NFL owners are scheduled to meet today in Atlanta, and hold their own vote on the proposed deal.
In other football news, 75 former players are suing the NFL, claiming the league concealed information about the danger of concussions since the 1920's.
To baseball, last night in Tampa, Freddy Garcia scattered eight hits over six and two thirds, as the Yankees whitewashed the Rays 4-0.
In Baltimore, Andrew Miller and three relievers combined on a two-hitter, as Boston shutout the Orioles 4-0.
In Detroit, former Yankee Hideki Matsui launched his 500th career home run, 168 in the Majors and 332 in Japan, powering Oakland over the Tigers 7-5.
Elsewhere in the AL, Minnesota topped Cleveland 7-5, Toronto dumped Seattle 11-6, Kansas City got by the White Sox 2-1 in 11, and the Angels edged Texas 9-8, snapping the Rangers 12-game winning streak.
Over to the NL, in Queens, Angel Pagan delivered a walk-off, tenth inning homer, as the Mets rallied from a four-run deficit to beat sputtering St. Louis 6-5.
Elsewhere, Milwaukee downed Arizona 5-2 in 10, Cincinnati held off Pittsburgh 3-1, the Dodgers blanked San Francisco 1-0, Colorado clipped Atlanta 3-2, Philadelphia hammered the Cubs 9-1, Houston edged Washington 3-2 in 11, and San Diego blew out Florida 14-3.
In golf, Tiger Woods has decided to dump Steve Williams as his caddie. The two had been together since March 1999, and had won 72 tournaments, including 13 majors.
And in cycling, Norway's Edvald Boasson Hagen won the 17th stage of the Tour de France. Thomas Voeckler retained the yellow jersey, but lost 27 seconds to Cadel Evans after riding off course.
