Ithaca, NY – A Cornell University economist says the community effects of hydraulic fracturing for natural gas are already apparent in New York's Southern Tier, even though gas
development has been on hold in the region for three years. WAMC's Ian Pickus has more...

Susan Christopherson of Cornell's Department of City and Regional Planning told the Tompkins County Council of Governments recently that natural gas drilling across the border in Pennsylvania produces a regional industrial effect that has important effects in Tompkins County _ such as heavy truck traffic and waste disposal.

Christopherson said the Elmira area is seeing some increase in sales tax revenue and is feeling pressure on housing stock because of the gas drilling in Pennsylvania.

New York regulators expect to release updated gas drilling rules next month.
