Details have been announced for the annual July 4th fireworks show in Springfield, Massachusetts.

After moving last year to a temporary venue, the program “Star Spangled Springfield” will be back at its traditional location—downtown along the banks of the Connecticut River.

"We are so happy to be back where we belong right here in Riverfront Park," said Judy Matt, president Spirit of Springfield.

She predicted a larger-than-usual audience this year with people curious to see the new Riverfront Park. It was closed last July 4th while undergoing a $3 million renovation.

The festivities in the park start at 6 p.m. with music and food vendors. There will be a flyover by military jets at about 7 p.m. The fireworks go off at 9:30 p.m.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
