A supermarket in Berkshire County is closing, laying off around 90 workers. WAMC’s Josh Landes has more.

Richard Bosey is the senior vice president of operations for Big Y, a New England supermarket chain with 70 locations. It’s about to close one of them in Adams, Massachusetts.

“We had invested some money in it in the past couple years, and it just wasn’t working for us," he told WAMC. "So we determined that it would be best for the town and best for us as a company to find an operator that was more suited to the small-town setup that we had there.”

Bosey said he couldn’t yet announce the store’s new operator. The closure is expected in March.

Josh Landes has been WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief since February 2018, following stints at WBGO Newark and WFMU East Orange. A passionate advocate for Western Massachusetts, Landes was raised in Pittsfield and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, receiving his bachelor's in Ethnomusicology and Radio Production. His free time is spent with his cat Harry, experimental electronic music, and exploring the woods.
