Results Show Impressive Voter Turnout In Midterm Election

The state's top elections official says more people cast ballots in the Nov. 6 election than in any previous midterm election in Massachusetts.

According to Secretary of State William Galvin, certified election results from cities and towns also show voter turnout was nearly 60.2 percent, the highest percentage for a midterm since 1994.

A total of 2,752,665 ballots were cast in Massachusetts. By law, the Governor's Council is expected to meet on Wednesday to officially certify the statewide results.

Galvin, a Democrat, attributes the high turnout to voters treating the midterm as a "national election," and coming out to vote even when there were no hotly-contested races in their own communities.

He expects voter interest to ramp up even more when the 2020 presidential campaign begins to heat up.
