Burlington's police chief is speaking out against prosecutors for dropping charges against a man involved in a downtown shooting that injured a bystander outside a bar.
Chittenden County State's Attorney Sarah George opted not to pursue charges against Carl Martin, who claimed he fired his gun in self-defense.
Police say the episode began in February with an argument between Martin and another man, Rashad Nashid. Police say the dispute escalated with both men pulling guns. Police say Nashid then fired shots that hit 27-year-old Chelsi Parker in the chest. Parker was struck in the lung but survived.
Martin's attorney said the prosecutor made the right call. But Burlington Police Chief Brandon del Pozo in a statement said he is in "respectful disagreement."
