Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources
A map of mosquito control projects in Massachusetts.

As the summer draws to a close, Berkshire County has been hit with a massive surge in its mosquito population. As the swarms thicken and reports of West Nile Virus emerge, WAMC checked in with Berkshire Mosquito Control Project superintendent Christopher Horton. In addition to explaining the approach to combating the threat, Horton also offered advice for residents looking to protect themselves from bites, and gave his best estimate for when the county will be free of the pests.

Josh Landes has been WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief since February 2018 after working at stations including WBGO Newark and WFMU East Orange. A passionate advocate for Berkshire County, Landes was raised in Pittsfield and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, receiving his bachelor's in Ethnomusicology and Radio Production. You can reach him at jlandes@wamc.org with questions, tips, and/or feedback.
