Mass MoCA Director Involved In Fatal Collision

The director of MASS MoCA was involved in a car-motorcycle collision that left one dead in North Adams Friday night.

The Berkshire District Attorney’s office says 49-year-old motorcyclist Steven Fortier died of his injuries at Berkshire Medical Center’s North Adams campus after a crash with a car driven by 59-year-old Joseph Thompson, the director of the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams.

Larry Smallwood, the museum’s deputy director, said the following in a statement to WAMC:

“Our hearts are with the family and friends of Steven Fortier. An investigation of the circumstances of the tragic accident is underway, and we will have no further comment at this time.”

The DA’s office says that the investigation is being conducted by members of the North Adams Police Department, state police detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s Office, and troopers from the Crime Scene Service Section and the Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section.

Josh Landes has been WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief since February 2018, following stints at WBGO Newark and WFMU East Orange. A passionate advocate for Western Massachusetts, Landes was raised in Pittsfield and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, receiving his bachelor's in Ethnomusicology and Radio Production. His free time is spent with his cat Harry, experimental electronic music, and exploring the woods.
