Pittsfield State Representative Tricia Farley-Bouvier has filed legislation for an annual sales tax holiday.

Farley-Bouvier, a Democrat representing the 3rd Berkshire district, says that her legislation with Holyoke Democrat Aaron Vega is a compromise between supporters and detractors of tax holidays in that it focuses on small businesses.

“Why don’t we just make it about small business, and we can leave the big box retailers out of it,” Farley-Bouvier told WAMC.

The tax holiday would occur over a two-day weekend in August, and exclusively effect independent businesses with less than 200 employees and no more than five locations. Massachusetts hasn’t had a tax-free weekend in the past two years.

Josh Landes has been WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief since February 2018, following stints at WBGO Newark and WFMU East Orange. A passionate advocate for Western Massachusetts, Landes was raised in Pittsfield and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, receiving his bachelor's in Ethnomusicology and Radio Production. His free time is spent with his cat Harry, experimental electronic music, and exploring the woods.
