West Nile has been found in mosquitoes in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
The state Department of Public Health has confirmed the presence of West Nile virus in a sample collected by the Berkshire County Mosquito Control Project in Pittsfield.
A truck-mounted spray application is scheduled for Thursday evening on all roads within a one-mile radius of the Route 41 and Route 20 intersection to prevent infection.
West Nile was also found in Richmond in early July.
Since 2011, there have been 58 cases of West Nile in mosquitoes and one human case in Berkshire County. Last year, there were fewer mosquitoes due to a statewide drought. Out of the 136 samples collected in 2016, one contained the West Nile virus.
West Nile occurs most frequently in August. Stagnant water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
