Slain Massachusetts Law Officers Added To National Memorial

The names of two law enforcement officers from Massachusetts who died in 2016 are being added this weekend to a national memorial in Washington, D.C.

One of the 143 grim additions to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial this year is the name of Thomas Clardy.

The Massachusetts State Trooper was killed in March 2016 when his cruiser was struck by a speeding car on the Mass Pike in Charlton.

Family, friends and colleagues including State Police Det. Lt. Brian O’Riordan came together earlier this year for a memorial mass.

" We are here to show our support for Tom's family. He was, by all accounts, a wonderful guy."

Also being added to the memorial this year is Ronald Tarantino, the Auburn Police Officer who was shot dead a year ago this month.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
