Springfield Mayor Proposes New Budget That Would Hire More Cops

WAMC

A new budget proposed to run the largest city in western Massachusetts would put more cops on the streets.

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno Tuesday recommended a nearly $629 million dollar budget for the fiscal year that begins in July.

Sarno said his spending plan, which now goes to the city council, calls for no layoffs, maintains basic city services, fully funds all labor contracts, and pays for a new police academy class of 50 – all while increasing total spending by less than 2 percent.

"We feel this is a good sound budget," Sarno said at a City Hall news conference Tuesday where he was joined by members of his finance team and several city department heads.

Sarno said the budget is balanced without tapping the city’s cash reserves and continues to pay down the city’s large unfunded pension liability.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
