The workshops will teach grandparents how to strengthen bonds with grandchildren and reduce the risk that they will use drugs.

The Northern Berkshire Community Coalition is hosting workshops to teach grandparents how to stop their grandchildren from abusing drugs.

More than 8,000 grandparents across Massachusetts are raising grandchildren who are involved, or whose parents are involved, in drugs. That’s according to a report approved by the Massachusetts Attorney General’s office.

In an effort to break the trend in Western Massachusetts, the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition’s Grandparents Raising Grandchildren support group is working to teach grandparents how to strengthen bonds with grandchildren and reduce the risk that they will use drugs.

The Northern Berkshire Community Coalition says 11 percent of children in the region report habitual use of marijuana and alcohol by grade 8.
