Springfield Forming Community Preservation Act Panel

City Hall in Springfield, Ma

Voters in several cities including Pittsfield, Holyoke, Springfield and Boston approved referendums last November to adopt the Community Preservation Act.

It puts a surcharge on property tax bills to create a fund to pay for historic preservation, open space and affordable housing projects.

Now, the process of actually implementing the CPA is underway.

WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Robert McCarroll, who headed the citizen committee that advocated for the CPA in Springfield.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
