Christopher Chappelear

A new study finds financial and health problems are the most common negative impacts of gambling.

A UMass Amherst-led research team conducted a survey of more than 5,000 Massachusetts residents as part of an extensive study into the consequences of introducing casino gambling in the state.  The new report was presented last week to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.

WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with one of the lead researchers, Dr. Rachel Volberg of the UMass Amherst School of Public Health and Health Sciences.

Paul Tuthill is WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief. He’s been covering news, everything from politics and government corruption to natural disasters and the arts, in western Massachusetts since 2007.
