Iranian nationals, who are affected by the immigration restrictions ordered by President Trump, represent a notable student population at UMass Amherst.

University spokesman Ed Blaguszewski said officials are working to help two students, both from Iran, and a scholar from Syria who have been unable to enter the United States since the president’s executive order.

"This is an evolving situation and we are trying to best understand how to help people and get them back in the country to rejoin the university community," Blaguszewski said Monday.

Among the university’s more than 2,800 international students are 77 Iranian nationals.

Two years ago, UMass banned Iranian students from certain science and engineering programs and then later reversed the policy.
