Massachusetts officials are making additional funds available to continue testing for lead in the water in public school buildings.
An additional $750,000 from the Massachusetts Clean Water Trust will allow for more schools to participate in the water testing program that started last April with $2 million.
MassDEP Commissioner Martin Suuberg said the program allows school districts to take samples at water fountains and taps, identify, and quickly fix problems.
" We really want to make sure that we have a good system of making sure that we know how water quality is in all the school buildings," said Suuberg.
Water tests completed so far in 451 school buildings found lead contamination in 164 schools and excessive copper levels in 76 schools.
