Ceremonies Honor Military Service

WAMC

Numerous ceremonies took place across the region Friday to thank veterans for their service.

On a campus lawn ringed by small American flags, Western New England University saluted people who are currently serving in the military and those who have served in the past.

There was a wreath-laying, a 21-gun salute, and the playing of taps.

A parade was held in Springfield from the Armory to City Hall, and a ceremony was scheduled at the Vietnam War Memorial in Mason Square – the oldest permanent Vietnam War Memorial in the country.

Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the memorial, making it eligible for national historic landmark status.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
