Numerous ceremonies took place across the region Friday to thank veterans for their service.
On a campus lawn ringed by small American flags, Western New England University saluted people who are currently serving in the military and those who have served in the past.
There was a wreath-laying, a 21-gun salute, and the playing of taps.
A parade was held in Springfield from the Armory to City Hall, and a ceremony was scheduled at the Vietnam War Memorial in Mason Square – the oldest permanent Vietnam War Memorial in the country.
Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the memorial, making it eligible for national historic landmark status.
