Switch To All-Electronic Tolling Happens Friday In Massachusetts

The move to all-electronic open road toll collection in Massachusetts begins Friday.

Motorists will no longer pay cash at toll plazas along the Turnpike. Tolls will be collected electronically through a system of sensors and cameras installed on gantries over the highway.

MassDOT has spent the summer encouraging people to obtain EZ Pass transponders, and is now warning about possible traffic tie-ups as toll plazas are torn down.

WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with MassDOT Highway Administrator Thomas Tinlin.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
