Gov. Charlie Baker is joining with officials from Walgreens to announce the creation of 13 drug take-back kiosks.

Baker says the kiosks will be located across the state as part of an effort to combat substance abuse.

The Republican governor plans to make the announcement Wednesday at a Walgreens in Quincy accompanied by Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch.

Baker says the move is part of an ongoing plan by Deerfield, Illinois-based Walgreens to install 500 of the medication disposal kiosks in its stores across the country.

Walgreens officials say the kiosks provide what they call a safe and convenient way to dispose of unwanted, unused or expired prescriptions, including controlled substances and over-the-counter medications at no cost.

The goal is to reduce overdose deaths and the misuse of medications.
