Biking And Flying Event Returns To Great Barrington

Facebook: Berkshire Bikenfly

An annual event that brings together cyclists and pilots in Great Barrington is being held Saturday. The 6th annual Berkshire Bike-N-Fly at the Great Barrington airport is a cycling race, an airplane expo and a country fair all in one. It includes 20-, 35- and 52-mile bike courses and rides in airplanes, helicopters and a tethered hot-air balloon. Organizer Richard Stanley says new this year is drone racing.

“A drone pilot is not looking at his craft, he’s wearing a pair of goggles that essentially puts him in the cockpit of that drone,” Stanley said.

Spectators can also watch drone racing through similar goggles. Area country band Whiskey City will perform in the afternoon. Proceeds benefit the Great Barrington Rotary’s Scholarship Fund which awarded $47,000 to more than 40 area youth in 2015. The event runs from 9 to 4 Saturday.
