A new study of five and a half years of Vermont State Police traffic stops shows signs of bias especially against African Americans.
The study shows black drivers are more likely to be pulled over than white drivers. White drivers received fewer citations.
Vermont Partnership for Fairness and Diversity director Curtiss Reed Jr. says the information helps a long-term cultural shift within the state police. “State police have the capacity now to drill down to individual troopers and individual barracks to determine what and why and where the disparity is taking place.”
The study analyzed more than 280,000 stops made by troopers between July 2010 and December 2015.
