A Vermont refugee official says the city of Rutland was one of a number of communities across the state that offered to host Syrian refugees who will be coming to the United States in the weeks and months to come.

Amila Merdzanovic is the director of the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program. She says that she and others held extensive meetings with representatives of those communities, but that "Rutland really rose to the top."

The United States is in the process of resettling 10,000 Syrians before the end of the current fiscal year. The 100 refugees would be resettled in Rutland beginning in October.

Rutland resident Wendy Wilton says her heart goes out to the refugees, but she's concerned about the cultural adaption of the refugees and security and economic concerns.
