Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin and his longtime partner Katie Hunt are now husband and wife.

The governor's office says Shumlin and Hunt were married Tuesday evening in a small ceremony at their home in East Montpelier.

The couple was married by the governor's sister-in-law, Evie Lovett. The ceremony was attended by the governor's two adult daughters Olivia and Becca and the governor's brother, Jeff Shumlin.

After Shumlin leaves office in early 2017, he and his wife plan to make their home in southern Vermont, where they both grew up.

The governor's office has said Hunt is an artist and landscape gardener.

In 2013, Shumlin announced that he and his first wife were divorcing.

In a statement, Shumlin and Hunt say they "are so fortunate to have such a beautiful partnership."
