Local, state and federal officials marking the ground-breaking for a new Downtown Transit Center in Burlington say they hope it will make moving in, out of and around Vermont's largest city easier.
The project will serve as a new hub for Chittenden County Transportation Authority bus routes throughout the region. Passengers will have a heated, indoor area to wait just a block off of Church Street. It includes a break room for drivers, restrooms and a ticketing area.
Senator Patrick Leahy calls the amenities dramatic improvements over the open air station that has operated for over 30 years at Cherry and Church Streets.
One advantage of the new center's location on Burlington's St. Paul Street is expected to be that fewer buses will have to cross the Church Street Marketplace.
