The head of the Boston-area public transportation system is stepping down after complaints about her decision to suspend rail service following a snowstorm. Late Wednesday Massachusetts Bay Transportation Agency General Manager Beverly Scott announced her upcoming resignation. The agency has come under fire for its on-again, off-again service problems during recent snowstorms, including the decision to suspend its subway and rail service from Monday night through Tuesday.

In a letter to the chairman of the state transportation board, Scott said she'll be leaving her post April 11, but didn't give a specific reason for her departure. She says she will focus her attention during the next two months on restoring normalcy to the aging system.

On Monday Governor Charlie Baker called the performance of the T "unacceptable." Wednesday evening, an administration spokesman said the governor was surprised by the resignation and thanked Scott for her contributions.
