The Vermont Corrections Department is taking part in two investigations into how a convicted sex offender escaped from a Windsor-based prison farm.

On Monday, 23-year-old Anthony Fitzgerald escaped from the Southeast State Correctional Facility in Windsor by cutting through a fence. He was recaptured eight hours later.

The Corrections Department is working with the state police on a criminal investigation. A separate investigation being conducted by the Agency of Human Services' investigation unit will focus on personnel and operational issues.

The Windsor prison is known for its outdoor work camps and programs.

Fitzgerald was serving a 3 ½ to 10-year sentence for a conviction of lewd and lascivious conduct with a child.
