Vermont Lawmakers Seek Own Info On Health Costs

Vermont lawmakers are going to be taking an independent look at health care costs over the coming months.

The legislature's Health Reform Oversight Committee met Wednesday to begin planning an analysis that will examine who pays for health care in the state, both directly and indirectly.

Co-chair of the committee, Senator Tim Ashe, emphasized that as a separate branch of government the legislature needed to establish an independent analysis.

The Joint Fiscal Office is expected to choose a contractor to perform the analysis with input from the committee within the next two weeks.

The Legislature has appropriated $800,000 for health care contracts over several years. Officials say the analysis discussed Wednesday will cost a fraction of that total.
