State and local officials marked the launch of a $30 million renovation at a heavily-debated school in North Adams.

A year ago city voters narrowly approved the renovation plan at the century-old Conte Middle School closed since 2009 by less than 140 votes. The newly named Colegrove Park Elementary School will replace the Sullivan School that was built in the 1960s. The Massachusetts School Building Authority will reimburse 80 percent of the $29.6 million project. State Treasurer and Democratic candidate for governor Steve Grossman chairs the MSBA and was on hand for the ceremonial groundbreaking.

“It was really a moment of rededication to a future of a city that’s been hit hard,” said Grossman.

North Adams will spend $6.5 million for the renovation expected to be completed by the end of summer 2015.
