Vermont Developing Rules For Post-Nuke Grants

Entergy/NRC

The Vermont Agency of Commerce and Community Development is creating guidelines to distribute grant money that will help Windham County after the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant shuts down.

Last year after the plant's owner, Energy Nuclear, announced it was closing the plant, it agreed to contribute $10 million over five years for economic development in Windham County.

Entergy recently paid the state $2 million, and Commerce Secretary Lawrence Miller says he'd like to see $500,000 of that money released to Windham County before the end of the year.

Deputy Secretary Lucy Leriche tells the Brattleboro Reformer the money will be used to fund proposals that have a direct impact on job retention and job creation.

She says they're expecting the first applications in July.
